Course of the San Antonio River

The San Antonio River is a 384 km long river in the US state of Texas .

River course

The San Antonio River has its source in Brackenridge Park in the city of San Antonio . After the source it runs, enclosed by walls, through the city center along the famous River Walk ; Flat tourist boats operate here. From San Antonio it flows in a south-easterly direction to the Gulf of Mexico and flows there together with the Guadalupe River into the San Antonio Bay . Because of its shallow depth, the San Antonio River is only navigable for smaller motorboats in the estuary. The catchment area covers 10,700 km².

Tributaries

The San Antonio River has two larger ( Medina River and Cibolo Creek ) and several smaller tributaries, which - like its actual source river, Salado Creek - fall dry at times. It is not dammed, but in some areas it is used to irrigate agricultural areas or as a watering place for herds of cattle.

history

La Espada Church
The Alamo Church

As the first European, Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca crossed the river in 1535. The city of San Antonio was founded in 1718. Thereafter, five Spanish missions emerged along its banks, which are summarized in today's San Antonio Missions National Historical Park ; the most famous of them is The Alamo .

Attractions

The Spanish Mission Churches of San Antonio are among the most significant historical landmarks in Texas. The San Antonio River Walk is a popular street for excursions and restaurants; the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) is also located here .
