San Fernando de Apure was the capital of the Venezuelan state of Amazon until the early 20th century. Today the capital is Puerto Ayacucho . San Fernando is located near the Orinoco , where it receives the Río Guaviare .

history

The city, formerly the Puinave village of Maracoa, was founded in 1758 by José Solano and named after Ferdinand VI. named by Spain .

In 1760, San Fernando was burned down and only rebuilt in 1765 by the Capuchin missionary Fray José A. de Xerez .

On April 24, 1800, Alexander von Humboldt visited the Conucos de Síquita and stayed in San Fernando. The geographer Agostino Codazzi also visited the city in the 1840s.

In 1822 San Fernando became the capital of the Río Negro territory of the Guiana Province, in 1856 under Governor José Tadeo Monagas capital of the Amazonas, from 1864 the capital of the Venezuelan state of Amazonas

From 1908 the rubber dealer Tomás Funes ruled the city. He was executed on January 30, 1921 on the orders of Arévalo Cedeño in the Plaza Bolívar and buried there.

In 1928, San Fernando lost its capital status to Puerto Ayacucho .

The city population in 1997 was around 5,000, in 2007 it had grown to 15,000.

Infrastructure

The most important buildings in the city include:
town hall, town hall, prefecture, three primary schools, a high school, a public library, a Catholic and a Protestant church and the “María Garrido” hospital with a laboratory, pharmacy and a special department for combating malaria.

In terms of transport, the city is connected by an airport and a small port.
