The Chiesa di San Giuseppe (also Oratorio di San Giuseppe ) is a church and oratory in Siena dedicated to Saint Joseph of Nazareth . It belongs to the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino .

The church is located in the historic center within the city ​​walls of Siena on Via di Fontanella at the intersection of Via Giovanni Dupré and Via Sant'Agata . It is located in the third third of the city, Terzo di Città, in the Contrada Onda (wave) and is its counterpart church. The adjacent former city gate is the Porta Sant'Agata (later also called Porta San Giuseppe ), it was created with the second expansion of the medieval city walls. In addition to the church, the building complex also includes the sacristy and the crypt , which today houses the Museum of the Contrada Onda.

The construction of the church was commissioned by the University of Siena for the Arte dei Legnaioli (Università dei Legnaioli), which received the area and permission to build churches in 1517. Construction began in 1521, the architect was Baldassarre Giusti from San Quirico d'Orcia . The church with the completion of the facade in 1653. The facade was completed in mudstone was created this year by Benedetto Giovannelli, the bust of marble above the entrance door, Josef performing, was created in the same year by Tommaso Redi. The owner of the octagonal dome is unclear, it is attributed to Baldassare Peruzzi or Bartolomeo Neroni (Il Riccio). The fountain (Fontanina battesimale), which is used to baptize the new contrada members, was made by Algero Rosi, the coat of arms painted by Vittorio Conti. The bronze decorations are from 1972 and are by Alfonso Buoninsegni.

The wooden gate that separates the anteroom comes from Pietro di Austo Montini and was built between 1712 and 1720. The vault above the entrance has a fresco by Appolonio Nasini, it was created in 1735 and shows the Genealogia di San Giuseppe . In the niches there are six statues by Giuseppe Mazzuoli from the end of the 17th century ( Isaia , Madonna Annunciata , San Giovanni Battista , San Giovanni Evangelista , San Paolo and San Pietro ). The canvas paintings are by Stefano Marzi ( Beato Bernardo Tolomei , created at the end of the 17th century) and Dionisio Montorselli ( San Bernardino (attributed to) and Santa Caterina di Siena ). The works Sposalizio di Maria Vergine and Presentazione di Gesù al tempio are ascribed to Deifebo Burbarini , the paintings Santa Famiglia e Angeli and Transito di San Giuseppe (fresco, 1643) are probably from the Nasini . There are also several frescoes and paintings of unknown origin in the interior. On the main altar is a terracotta statue of San Giuseppe by Domenico Arrighetti. The painting Madonna col Figlio e Angeli (left chapel) from 1594 is assigned to Francesco Bartalini. The stucco chapel altar from 1685, depicting Gloria di San Giuseppe , comes from the Mazzuolis, the statue of the saint is attributed to Domenico Arrighetti. The right chapel contains a 17th century wooden cross.

The octagonal crypt ( Cripta di San Giuseppe ) is now a meeting room and museum of contradictions. In the entrance area there are paintings from the 16th century ( Madonna col Bambino e Santi and Crocifissione , assigned to Bernadino Capitelli). In the crypt there are several statues of Giovanni Dupré and his daughter Amalia, which are devoted to political issues. In the Room of Victories (Sala delle Vittorie) the canvas painting Martirio di Santa Caterina d'Alessandria by Stefano Volpi from 1615 is installed.
