San José with beach and bay
Playa de Monsul

San José is a village within the municipality of Níjar in the Spanish province of Almería in southern Andalusia . The popular holiday resort is located in the Cabo-de-Gata- Níjar Nature Park on the extreme south-east coast of Spain and had 1,012 inhabitants in 2011. However, the population temporarily increases to 20,000 people in the summer months. The beach of San José is located on a shallow bay on the Costa de Almería near the marina.

About 2 km south of San José is the Playa de los Genoveses , a popular 1,000 m long bathing beach with rocky headlands at each end. Another 2 km to the west is the Playa de Mónsul . The beach is covered with gray sand of volcanic origin and huge dark chunks of volcanic rock. The area has served as the backdrop for several feature films. Both beaches are among the most beautiful in Spain.

Numerous films have already been shot on both beaches, "Playa de los Genoveses" and "Playa de Mónsul". Parts of "Pirates of the Caribbean" were filmed here. Above all, there is still pure nature here, which also means that the distance to the beach may not be covered with your own car in summer. You can either walk or use the shuttle bus from San Jóse to get to the two beaches. In winter, the beaches and numerous bays can be accessed by car again.

history

The oldest evidence of human settlement in this region comes from Los Escullos , a town about 8 km north of San José, and was dated to the Middle Stone Age, some even to the Paleolithic . The first settlements that could be assigned to the Los Millares culture (2500 to 1800 BC) emerged in the Neolithic and the Copper Age , while the finds from the Bronze Age belong to the El Argar culture (1800 to 1300 BC) .) belong. These settlements were near numerous copper mines in the area, where there was also water and shelter in caves. Both cultures are now considered to be the most important in Western Europe to study the beginnings of metalworking. Their decline occurred in the Late Bronze Age (1000 to 800 BC), when Tatars appeared at the mouth of the Guadalquivir and ousted Western culture.

Between 1733 and 1735, on the orders of Philip V, the fortress of San José was built on the coast of Andalusia. It was equipped with three batteries to monitor and protect this stretch of coast. The nearby bays of Cala Genoveses and Cala Higuera were popular anchorages for pirates to replenish their water and food supplies. The small fishing village of the same name was created under the protection of this military facility.
