The Church of San Juan , also San Juan ante Portam Latinam , in the almost abandoned village of Santibáñez del Río belongs to the municipality of Doñinos de Salamanca and is located near the city of Salamanca , the capital of the province of the same name in the Spanish autonomous region of Castile and León . The early Romanesque church was built towards the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century. In 1983 the dilapidated church, which no longer has a roof, was declared a monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ).

architecture

The church has a single nave and is built from regularly hewn sandstone blocks. Corrugated stones with depictions of animals, human heads and geometric shapes run under the roof . The stone slabs that support the roof are almost entirely decorated with a frieze of rosettes or with a checkerboard pattern.

portal

The round arch portal on the south facade, which has only a single archivolt , deserves special attention . This is set with a frieze of rosettes . The portal is framed by an alfiz , the top of which is carved with a frieze of foliage and small cat-like heads.

The three large corbels above the portal probably originally served to support a canopy or vestibule . On the left stone a human head is depicted between two barrels, on the right an elephant and in the middle two birds drinking together from a well.

The first two vaulted stones of the portal are inscribed in Latin. The inscription on the left stone reads: QUISQUIT AM / AT CHRISTUM MUNDUM / NON DILIGIT ISTUM / SED QUASI FECTOREM (sic) SPERIT ILLI AMORES (Everyone who loves Christ, don't choose this world, but hope in his love). The inscription on the right side reads: O RIVES, RIVES / NON OMNI TEMPORE / VIVES FAC BENE DUM / VIS POST MORTEM / VIVERE SI VIS (O Rives, Rives you do not live forever, do good while you live when you are after death want to live).
