history
Although the official founding act of the city has been lost, it is believed that San Luis was founded on August 25, 1594 under the name Nueva Medina de Río Seco by Luis Jufré de Loaysa y Meneses . Since the new place was soon abandoned, it was re-founded in 1632 by Martín García Óñez de Loyola as San Luis de Loyola Nueva Medina de Río Seco . The place was later renamed San Luis de la Punta de los Venados and finally San Luis. At the end of the 19th century, the city had 7,000 inhabitants and traded lively.
Because San Luis is located on the part of the Sierras Grandes called Punta de los Venados , the inhabitants of the city are commonly referred to as Puntanos .
In 2003, the satellite town of La Punta was built 25 km north of the actual city with the intention of founding the "city of the 21st century". This settlement, which currently has around 30,000 inhabitants, houses social housing, a university, a technology park and the city's new football stadium.
