San Pietro Martire ( dt . : Saint Peter the Martyr) is a Roman Catholic Church ( Italian : Chiesa di San Pietro Martire) in Tirano in the district of Baruffini , near the Swiss border in the Italian province of Sondrio , Lombardy region . The church belongs to the ecclesiastical region of Lombardy , the diocese of Como , and is dedicated to St.Peter of Verona (* around 1206 in Verona; † April 6, 1252 in Farga near Milan, also Petrus Martyr or Petrus von Milano), a Dominican preacher of the 13th century Century, who was appointed papal inquisitor for Como and Milan in 1251 and had the Cathars persecuted and killed, thus incurring rejection and hatred, which is why he was killed on April 6, 1252 near Milan.

Location and history

The church is located in the Baruffini fraction above Tirano and was built in 1536 and consecrated on August 13, 1537 by Giovanni Melegaris and Cesare Trivulzio. In the records of Bishop Felizian Ninguarda from the summer of 1589 it is still written that the church was also consecrated to St. Martha, but this consecration has been lost over the centuries.

The church was renovated in the 17th century and expanded under the direction of the architect Carlo Maciachini (Tirano) in 1876 and restored in 2001.

building

The largely white church was built during the Renaissance and shows the classic lines used at that time. These are kept simple and based on historical models (see e.g. the entrance area, portal).

The interior of the church was renovated in the Baroque period . The interior is dominated by the ribbed vault with the colored frescoes and the paintings. Behind the retracted choir arch is the rectangular apse into which the ribbed vault is extended. Also noteworthy are the wooden altarpieces and the altar, both works by Michele Cogoli from 1670 to 1675.

The organ is located above the main portal on a wooden gallery .
