Baruffini (local dialect : Barfì ) is a fraction of the municipality of Tirano in the province of Sondrio , Lombardy in Italy and is located on the southern slope of Monte Masuccio at about 820 m above sea level, about 3 km as the crow flies from the Swiss border. It is about 4 km to Tirano.

Surname

The linguistic derivation of the name Baruffini is uncertain. In some cases this is tried to be traced back to the Lombard ruffle ( fight ) or barrage . According to the historian Ennio Emanuele Galanga, the most convincing origin of the village name can be traced back to a proper name, probably Baruffi.

Classification

The area of the village has been divided into nine contrade since ancient times : Bottigioli, Buglio, Case alte, Dossello, Mocchioni, Parlenti, Piazzo, Selva and Santo Stefano.

history

Baruffini was already settled in prehistoric times. The Church of San Pietro Martire was built in 1536. On December 8, 1807, after a long period of rain, a major landslide occurred that destroyed the agricultural area in Baruffini, streets and houses.

The first natural road was built in 1922, and electrical energy has been available in the village since 1928. The first telephone line went into operation on September 17, 1932. There has been a bus connection with Tirano since 1955.

On October 4, 1953, a separate elementary school was opened, and as early as 1910 there was the possibility of teaching in Baruffini. The decline in the number of students led to the closure of the primary school in 1989.

economy

Baruffini was and is dominated by agriculture, mainly through viticulture and apple orchards. Tourism plays a subordinate role. Some croti have survived from agricultural activity .

Due to the lack of employment opportunities in Baruffini, the separation of the Valtellina from Switzerland in 1798 and the proximity to the now Swiss border, a brisk smuggling activity developed in the 19th century, which ensured a certain prosperity in the village. When the lira was devalued in the 1970s , the profit margins in traditional smuggling from Switzerland to Italy also fell sharply and smuggling activity also fell drastically.

traffic

Baruffini is located on an old traffic route from San Romerio (Berninaroute - Via Bernina ) to Switzerland and the Lake Constance area ( Via Valtellina ) over the Bernina Pass and the northern Italian plain ( Po Valley ) to Italy. }
