Tufts of sand

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The tuft of sand is a forest on the district of Mittelherwigsdorf in the Görlitz district in Saxony . It was expanded in 1958 to become a sports and cultural center for the municipality of Oberherwigsdorf and is known for the sand cluster festivals that take place twice a year.

location

The tuft of sand is just under a kilometer west of Oberherwigsdorf. The wood is on the left of the K 8616 county road to Niederoderwitz and is bordered to the south by a dirt road into the Landwassertal . In the north rises the horse mountain (406 m above sea level), south of the land mountain (313 m above sea level). The tuft of sand is surrounded by the Landberg houses to the west and Niederoderwitz to the north-west. To the north, the Schwarze Graben, also known as Augustin's Graben, flows past.

description

The grove includes a nameless knoll (332 m above sea level) and the source of the sand clump ditch south of it.

history

At the beginning of the 20th century the area was still unforested. There were two smaller sand pits on the northwest slope of the hilltop. After the hilltop was covered with bushes, the Oberherwigsdorf workers' sports club held its summer festivals there under the motto “Fresh, pious, happy, free” during the Weimar Republic .

In 1958 the municipality of Oberherwigsdorf decided to expand the sand cluster as a local recreation center. She leased the one and a half hectare site from Arwin Augustin. Between autumn 1958 and 1959, leveling work was carried out as part of the National Reconstruction Works, with a total of 3,746 hours of voluntary work being done. The inauguration took place on October 7, 1959 as part of the first official sand cluster festival.

The festival area was expanded in the following years. In 1961 a 24 m² dance floor was built, which two years later was replaced by a 50 m² massive dance floor. The master blacksmith Burkhardt built a children's carousel in 1963. In the 1960s, work began to build a bath at Sandbüschelgraben, but it was never completed. In addition to the annual demonstrations on May 1st, followed by concerts with the brass band of VEB Kraftverkehr Zittau or the Schlegel pioneer brass orchestra, summer festivals were also held.

On January 1, 1967, the community bought the tuft of sand. From 1969 a central water truck replaced the previous drinking water supply with milk cans. In the early 1970s, massive sales stalls began to be erected. The first kiosks were opened in 1972.

After the incorporation of Oberherwigsdorf to Mittelherwigsdorf, the village club Mittelherwigsdorf took over the tuft of sand in 1972. By 1974, all kiosks had a water connection to the water truck. About 3000 guests came to the 15th anniversary of the sand cluster festival in August 1974, which was also the highest number of visitors. During this time there were demonstrations by the bicycle art group, the Niederoderwitz equestrian and amateur artists from the VEB Robur-Werke Zittau . “Days of Socialist Agriculture” were also held in the tuft of sand. The numerous sand cluster festivals were known far beyond the municipal boundaries, and visitors came from all over the region. They were also mentioned in the Zittau tourist city guide published in 1979. In 1984 Dieter Dornig performed at the 25th anniversary of the sand cluster festival. In 1989, 30 years of sand cluster festivals were celebrated. The festival in autumn 1989 was initially the last, after the fall of the Wall the village club dissolved.

In 1991 the tradition of sand cluster festivals was resumed on a smaller scale. In the first two years Reinhard Schneider took over the management, from this the Sandbüschelverein developed, which has been organizing the festivals since 1993. The annual number of sand cluster festivals has been reduced to three: the Ascension Party and one festival each in June and August. In connection with one of the two festivals, a cockerel crows of the poultry breeders' association has been held on a Sunday since 1998. In 1998 the tuft of sand was connected to the central water supply, so the water truck was no longer needed. The 40th anniversary was celebrated in June 1999 with the Oberland chapel under the direction of Adolf Kiertscher . In the years 2000–2001 the sanitary facilities were modernized. Since the 2000s, there has also been a celebration at the witch fire in the tuft of sand .

The tuft of sand is also used by the Volkssolidarität Mittelherwigsdorf for senior summer festivals with brass music and by the Protestant parish for a summer service and festivals. The dog sports club also used part of the site at times. The Opel-Team Zittauer Land eV organizes an Opel meeting on a June weekend. In addition, the club's premises are also used for private celebrations as well as celebrations by schools and children's facilities.
