Sandegård

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Sandegård in Åker parish, about one kilometer from the south coast of the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea , the remains of a large settlement from the Iron Age and a gold treasure were found in 1869 . Like Dalshøj near Ibsker and Sorte Muld, Sandegård is one of the typical Bornholm sites with black earth .

During the excavation E. Vedel came across a 50 cm high layer of culture . It contained a floor made of sandstone slabs , charcoal , burnt clay , stone settings and animal bones, but only a few iron fragments or broken ceramics . During subsequent excavations, the plowed-up remains of a burned down house were found. Since 1986 probe users have found a number of primers and other objects, some of high quality. These included denarii , dirhems and solidi, as well as medieval or more recent coins . The spectrum includes finds from the older Iron Age to the Viking Age, with a focus on the Vendel Period (from 550 AD).

Because of the finds of broken gold and silver, weights , semi-finished products , smelting drops and slag as well as traces of iron processing, Sandegård can be described as a coastal craft center. Phosphate examinations, small test excavations and the distribution of finds indicate that the settlement consisted of two courtyards surrounded by workshop areas.

The gold treasure

The gold treasure from 1869 consists of four solidi (1 imitation Theodosius II. 401–450 AD and 3 pieces. Leo I. 440–461 AD), one bar, one round piece of gold, two pieces of chopped gold, one cone-shaped Button (sword bead), a spiral ring and the quarter of a large C bracteate . Another diagonally adjacent quarter of the same bracteate was found plowing near Rønne in 1829 . The bracteate is characterized by a wide, hallmarked edge zone, which is remarkable for its human heads depicted in profile. With a diameter of 10.7 cm, it is the second largest gold brakreat known to date, which stylistically belongs to the early phase of the bracteate tradition.
