Sangha (other spelling Sanga ) is a community in the Bandiagara district of the Mopti region in Mali and is considered the cultural center of the Dogon on the rocks of Bandiagara .
The place is about 725 kilometers by road from Bamako at an altitude of 518 m on the Bandiagara plateau and includes 56 villages. The administrative center is Sangha Ogol Leye . The majority of the population is Dogon . The French ethnologist Marcel Griaule lived here for several years to study the Dogon people.
The townscape is characterized by adobe buildings of the Sudanese - Sahelian architecture in Mali. Typical are the Dogon palaver huts , known as Toguna , with a very low roof.
On June 10, 2019, at least 95 people died in a night terror attack on the Sangha village of Sobame Da (also known as Sobane-Kou).
climate
Sangha is located in the semi-arid climatic zone of the Sahel with two seasons: the dry season between November and May and the rainy season between June and October. The annual amount of precipitation fluctuates between 400 and 500 mm and is distributed over only around 30 days in summer.
economy
Agriculture is the dominant economic factor in Sangha. The cultivation of onions and millet is characteristic of the area . Livestock raising affects sheep, goats and donkeys.
Another important source of income for the population is tourism, as Sangha is the tourist center for excursions in the Dogon country. However, as a result of the conflicts in Northern Mali and the associated travel warnings, the number of visitors has fallen sharply.
