Sanikiluaq (ᓴᓂᑭᓗᐊᖅ) is the southernmost settlement of Nunavut and belongs to the Baffin region. It is located on the Belcher Islands belonging to the island of Flaherty in Hudson Bay , about 150 kilometers from the west coast of northern Québec , and has about 850 inhabitants (90% of them Inuit ).
Both people of the Dorset culture lived here from around 500 BC. BC to 1000 AD as well as members of the Thule culture between 1000 and 1800, direct ancestors of the Inuit. Henry Hudson was the first European to cross the Belcher Islands in 1610, and then it was apparently until 1914 that Robert J. Flaherty , best known for his 1922 film Nanuk, the Eskimo , had to winter in the Sanikiluaq area.
The Hudson's Bay Company opened its first trading post in 1928, which operated sporadically until the 1950s. In 1961, the Canadian government established the first school on the southern part of Flaherty Island. In 1971 the Sanikiluaq settlement was officially established.
Sanikiluaq can be reached via the Sanikiluaq Airport with aircraft from the regional airline Air Inuit Ltd.
