The Sankt-Marien-Kirche at Friedrichstrasse 87 is the Roman Catholic church in the town of Schönebeck (Elbe) in Saxony-Anhalt .

History and architecture

In the period between 1859 and 1871 the pastoral care of Schönebeck's Catholics was carried out by the clergyman in Calbe (Saale) . In 1872 a missionary vicar was first sent. The first Catholic priest of Schönebeck since the Reformation was Vicar Carl Holst, who died during a typhus epidemic . His grave is now behind the Marienkirche. From 1877 to 1892 the position could not be filled because of the Kulturkampf , so that the Schönebecker community was again run as a branch of Calbes.

In 1873, Franciscan nuns from Salzkotten opened a nurses' station, including a children's home and a communication center. From 1939 the facility served as an infant home . At first there was a small emergency church on the site.

From 1906 to 1908, today's St. Mary's Church was built as a brick building according to plans by the building council and royal district building inspector Körner . The construction was carried out in neo-Gothic style on a cross-shaped floor plan. On June 22, 1912, the consecration took place by the Paderborn Bishop Karl Joseph Schulte .

The church was renovated in 1961/1962. In 1980 underfloor heating was installed, with the altar and choir given their current design.

The interior and the colored glazing of the windows were designed by Christof Grüger . The colored glass designs in the nave, created between 1960 and 1961, are called Building Blocks of Creation , the choir singing praises of creation . On the left window of the choir unreasonable creation is represented an evolutionary development. From bottom to top, crystals and atoms, plants and animals are shown. In the right window of the rational creation , people, saints and angels are depicted. In the choir, the copper sculpture The Great Returning One , created in 1962, depicts the blessing Christ. In 1971/72 the church was supplemented by a Marian mosaic created by Grüger as a meditation picture, in which Mary is represented as a vessel of the Holy Spirit. The zodiac signs shown point to December 25th and should show Christ as the fulfillment of all religions.

The Magdeburg sculptor Detlef Rossdeutscher created the altar and the lectern . In the altar there is a grapevine relief with which Jesus said in the Gospel of John “I am the vine, you are the branches. Who stays in me and in whom I stay, brings rich fruit. ”Is referred to. The lectern represents a modern person, lying on the floor seeking help. His hand touches the word of God proclaimed from the desk.

In 1980 the parish acquired a figure of the Virgin Mary from the first half of the 15th century.

From 1983 the Magdeburg artist B. Johansen created pictures depicting Jesus' Way of the Cross. The picture also shows stylized wearers of gas masks and steel helmets as an indication of the dangers of modern times.

The organ, inaugurated in November 1986, is located in the right aisle . It was made by the organ building company Wolfgang Nußbücker from Plau , has two manuals and has 27 registers and four transmissions.

On May 1, 2006 the Mariengemeinde formed a community association with the Sankt-Norbert-Gemeinde in Calbe. Finally, on November 28, 2010, the parish of St. Marien and St. Norbert was founded .

From June 2009, work was done on the floor and the underfloor heating of the church. The electrics and lighting were also renewed. The walls were painted light, the windows were refurbished, and parts of the altar were redesigned. By the 1st of Advent 2009 the work was essentially completed.
