Pierre Dansereau (1943)

Pierre Mackay Dansereau CC GOQ FRSC (born October 5, 1911 in Outremont ; † September 29, 2011 in Montreal ) was a Canadian ecologist , botanist and university professor who was one of the pioneers in the history of ecology and because of his love for his field studies the "barefoot ecologist" ('l'écologiste aux pieds nus') was called. Its botanical author abbreviation is “ Dans. ".

Life

Dansereau completed a course of study after attending school and also had study visits to Europe in 1936 at a time when the history of ecology was still in its infancy. After his return to Canada he worked with the clergyman Marie-Victorin from 1939 to 1942 at the Montreal Botanical Garden and from 1943 to 1950 lecturer at the University of Montreal .

In 1950 he moved to the Botanical Garden of the University of Michigan and was there until 1955 as a professor of botany. He then returned to Canada and was Professor and Director of the Institute of Botany at the University of Montreal from 1955 to 1961, before he was both Vice Director of the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) and Professor of Botany and Geography at Columbia from 1961 to 1972 University was.

After his return he took up a chair in the Faculty of Management at the University of Montreal and was also director of the local research center for science and the environment from 1972 to 1976. In the following years he increasingly dealt with ecology and the ecological consequences of construction measures and wrote, among other things, an environmental impact study on the construction of the Aéroport international Montréal-Mirabel in 1975, regretting that the consequential damage was not limited by the construction.

This ultimately contributed to the fact that Dansereau dealt with environmental protection in the following decades and endeavored to protect ecology and cultural heritage as well as to achieve balanced growth of town and country. Dansereau, who has received several awards and wrote over 600 scientific publications in the course of his life, was director of the Laboratory for the Study of Ecosystems at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) even after his retirement in 1976 until shortly before his death . For his services he was named Companion of the Order of Canada .
