Saint Martini Church

The Sankt-Martini-Kirche , also known as St. Martin's Church , is a Protestant church in the city of Gröningen in Saxony-Anhalt .

Architecture and history

The church goes back to a medieval building. Today's church tower, whose foundations are dated to around 1200, dates from this time. After the building fell into disrepair, it was largely rebuilt, which was completed in 1418. This previous building was rebuilt in the 17th century. Large parts of the square tower, such as the bell storey and the slender top of the tower, date from 1616 or 1617. From 1901 to 1906, the present-day nave was largely rebuilt. The single-nave church was laid out like a wall pillar church . The church represented the parish church and the center of the village.

Furnishing

The interior of the ship is spanned by a wooden barrel ceiling. The ceiling is decorated with representations from the Old and New Testament . The drawings are a copy of the ceiling design that existed in the previous building. Various other pieces of equipment also come from the old nave, so that the interior design contains baroque elements. So the galleries and a patronage box from around 1620 of the old ship, including rich carvings and coats of arms, were re-erected in the new building.

The richly ornamented altarpiece shows a crucifixion scene in the middle part. Reliefs of the evangelists can be found on the pulpit basket . A wooden crucifix is dated to the 17th century. An oil painting of Christ made on wood, which was created in 1548, is much older. There is also a Romanesque font from around 1200. The organ dates from 1707.

There are also several historical tombstones in the church. A little out of sandstone crafted epitaph on which the deceased is kneeling displayed in front of a crucifix, dated already to the beginning of the 16th century. Also noteworthy are the tombstones of Elisabeth von Brandenstein, who died in 1586, and Heinrich von der Lühe, who died in 1591.

Outside the church there is a 15th century tombstone. The stone, created for a clergyman, shows a figurative representation made using the scratch technique .
