location

The church is located on the north-west side of the Plaça Major of the village. From the west, a narrow alley designed as a staircase leads down to Carrer del Rei Jaume II .

history

The first mention of a parish in Montuïri comes from a bull by Pope Innocent IV from 1248. However, it was still consecrated to Santa Maria and Sant Pere and was located in the district of Molinar. The current church building was built in the 14th century. In 1515 the roof of the church was renewed. The church tower was renovated from 1552 onwards. At the end of the 16th century, the church had to be expanded. Between 1750 and 1773, both the church roof and the vault spanning the chancel were renewed.

In 1813, the twelve-step staircase in front of the east side of the church, known as Es Graons , was built.

During a renovation in the 1950s, some of the Gothic elements that were hidden during the construction work in the Baroque era were exposed again.

architecture

The facade of the church is simple. The five-storey church tower is located on the southwest corner and has a square floor plan. The fifth floor is designed with two pointed arches on each side. The main portal is located on the narrow south side. Above the gate there is a baroque frontispiece with an image of a saint. There is a rosette above it .

The side portal on the east side is flanked by door posts with volutes and also has a frontispiece. In addition to the year 1643, the coat of arms of Montuïri is depicted there. A modern clock has been inserted into the facade above the door.

Interior design

The nave is of one with lunettes provided vault spans. There are round windows in the stitch caps. The panes are decorated with stained glass depicting saints from the 20th century. There are six painted medallions on the ceiling, on which the years of construction of the ceiling sections are indicated. On each long side of the church there are six side chapels , which are separated from the nave by flat arches.

On the left is the baptistery with a hexagonal baptismal font in the Renaissance style . The wooden cover of the pool is pyramid-shaped. There is a window with a representation of the baptism of Jesus. Another chapel honors Sant Antoni. The altarpiece is baroque .

Another chapel is the lower Roser Chapel, created in 1698. It has a cruciform floor plan and in turn consists of a cruciform covered by a dome, a chancel and two side chapels. It is partly covered by a cross vault and partly by a barrel vault. The chapel has an apse and a main altar that was created in 1805 and depicts the Holy Virgin Mare de Déu del Roser.

Other chapels on this page are the Sant Crist chapel and the Sant Josep chapel. The latter contains an early Baroque altar from the so-called Blanquer School. There is also a chapel in honor of the Immaculate.

On the right-hand side below the gallery there is a chapel with two small baroque arches. The right arch serves as the foot of the stairs to the gallery. In the chapel dedicated to the name of Jesus there is an altarpiece from the early 17th century in the Mannerist style . The coat of arms of the Villalonga family is depicted on the keystone of the chapel vault . The Sagrats Cors Chapel , the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts, has a neo-baroque altar depicting Mary and Jesus.

In the fifth chapel on the right there are remains of an altarpiece from the Renaissance period . It was created in the 16th century by Mateu Llopis in honor of Sant Bartomeu. A soul in purgatory is depicted in the keystone of the chapel vault .

Another chapel exists in honor of Santa Catalina de Sena. In the chapel there is a painting showing the saint.

The three-winged tower of the main altar of the church has two levels and was built in 1789 by Josep Sastre Tamorer . The middle part of the essay contains a tabernacle in the lower part and above it an image of St. Bartholomew. Other saints are depicted on the side wings. On the left side of the sanctuary there is a painting of the Blessed Virgin Mare de Déu del Pilar. On the right is the passage to the sacristy .

The sacristy has a rectangular floor plan and is spanned by groin vaults. In the room there is a stone washbasin, decorated with the local coat of arms and dated to 1642.

The organ of the church dates from the 17th century and is located on a gallery . There are also paintings depicting prophets by Jaume Martorell in 1775 .

In front of the east side of the church there has been a monument to the composer Antoni Martorell i Miralles, who was born in Montuïri, since 2010 .
