history

The first mention of the church dedicated to the Apostle Peter comes from the year 1063. In 1136 an Augustinian monastery was founded on the site. The present church was built towards the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century. It was consecrated in 1245 by the Bishop of Girona , Guillermo de Montgrí . After a period of decline, the monastery (Spanish Monasterio de San Pedro Cercada ) was coming in 1480 . In 1592 it was placed under the Augustinian monastery of La Seu d'Urgell , the church served as a parish church .

The buildings to the west of the church originally belonged to the monastery. Today they are used as apartments. The cloister and the monks' cells are no longer preserved.

inner space

The church is built on the plan of a Latin cross . An octagonal dome rises above the crossing . A semicircular apse adjoins it in the east, and the transept arms also open to two smaller apses in the east.

An open bell tower ( espadaña ), which is broken by two large arched openings, crowns the west facade. This has a of pillars and plain archivolts framed portal . The pillars are decorated with capitals with stylized leaves and small human heads on them. At the top of the capitals there is a frieze of partly intertwined circles, which also contain foliage. Inscriptions are carved into the struts of the two inner capitals. The tympanum is unadorned. A round arched window opens above the portal, which is surrounded by archivolts with multiple profiles.
