Erich Hable (born March 14, 1911 in Trieben ; † July 2, 2001 in Frojach ) was an Austrian teacher and ornithologist .

Life

After attending the elementary and community school and the teacher training institute in Graz , Hable got a job in 1930 at the elementary school Mühlen near Neumarkt. In 1932 he obtained the teacher qualification certificate and was primary school director in Schönberg near Oberwölz until 1945 . During this time, Hable passed his examination for the function of a leader at rural advanced training schools and a secondary school examination for natural history, geography and pedagogy and became head of the rural advanced training schools in Schönberg and Winklern . During the Second World War, Hable was recalled as a biology teacher at the teacher training institutes in Marburg an der Drau and Wagna and used as a mountain hunter in France and Italy. From 1948 until his retirement in 1976, Hable was elementary school director in Frojach and at the same time biology teacher for the Matura classes at the music and pedagogical high school in Murau .

In 1951, Hable founded the working group for natural history teachers at compulsory schools in the Murau district, which he headed until 1976. Furthermore, in 1953 Hable was one of the founding members of the Austrian Society for Ornithology, today BirdLife Austria , of which he was second chairman from 1977 to 1988. In 1976 he founded the district office of the Austrian Nature Conservation Union for the Murau district, which he headed until 1996.

In 1961, Hable became the nature conservation officer for the Murau district . During his 28 years of activity, 50 natural monuments, six landscape protection areas, four protected parts of the landscape and eleven nature protection areas were planned and designated. The Pater Blasius Hanf research facility at the Furtnerteich in Mariahof was set up in 1963 through Hables' initiative , which he led as honorary scientific director until 1990.

Hable was married and had two daughters.

Ornithologist and zoologist

Through numerous study trips and excursions in the immediate vicinity of Styria, Hable deepened his knowledge of botany and zoology, but above all of ornithology, through self-study.

In the Styrian-Carinthian area on the Zirbitzkogel and in the Nockberge Mountains, Hable was able to find new evidence of the Mornell ringed plover, which had been considered extinct for a hundred years . He achieved fame through researching breeding behavior and migration routes in the Alps. The discovery of the first breeding colony of the rock tern on the Puxerwand in the Puxerloch and the occurrence of the birch mouse in Austria can also be traced back to Hable's observations.

In more than 150 articles, Hable published his scientific observations in the field of ornithology and zoology. In addition, he was co-author of the Red Lists of Endangered Birds of Styria and Austria , author and editor of the Styrian central index of ornithological data , the author index of Styrian ornithologists and collaborator on the handbook of birds of Central Europe .

Awards

Hable received numerous honors for his scientific commitment in the field of ornithology and nature conservation.
