Santa Elena is a town in the Chuquisaca department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Santa Elena is the central place of the canton Santa Elena in the municipality Villa Charcas (formerly part of the municipality Incahuasi ) in the province of Nor Cinti . The place is located at an altitude of 2166  m on the left, northern bank of the Río Santa Elena , downstream a left tributary of the Río Pilcomayo .

Santa Elena is located on the northern edge of the mountain region of the Cordillera de Tajsara o Tarachaca in the semi-arid transition area between the semi-humid mountain forests of the eastern mountain ranges of Bolivia and the arid Altiplano . The climate is a cool, moderate mountain climate with a typical time of day climate , in which the mean temperatures fluctuate more strongly during the day than during the year.

Traffic situation

Santa Elena is 405 kilometers by road south of Sucre , the capital of the department.

The 898-kilometer Ruta 5 highway runs through Sucre and leads from the Cordillera Oriental across the Altiplano to the Chilean border. From Sucre, the road leads 169 kilometers in a south-westerly direction to Potosí , where it meets the north-south running Ruta 1 . From there it is another 122 kilometers on Ruta 1 to Padcoyo . From there, an unpaved road leads eastwards via Ocurí to Palacio Tambo , and in Ocurí a road branches off in a southerly direction and leads via Malliri and Chiñimayu to Huancarani Alto ; the road climbs on its 45-kilometer route between Chiñimayu and Huancarani Alto to heights of just over 4000 meters.

Two kilometers south of Huancarani Alto, a country road branches off to the east and reaches the village of Palcapata after another two kilometers. At the end of the village, the road leads to the south on the Rio Villa Charcas along, leaving the river to one and a half kilometers to the east and, after further one and a half kilometers on the highway that of Pucara north to Sacari , Santa Elena and Caiza "K" leads .
