Santa Eulalia (Barrio de Santa María)
The church of Santa Eulalia in Barrio de Santa María , a place in the municipality of Aguilar de Campoo in the province of Palencia in the Spanish autonomous region of Castile-León , became the parish church of a place abandoned in the Middle Ages at the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century ( despoblado ) erected. The church, known as ermita ( hermitage ), is located on a hill outside the village, which has its own parish church. In 1966 the church, in which Romanesque wall paintings have been preserved, was declared a monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ).
architecture
The church is made of regularly hewn sandstone . The current bell tower on the west facade was built in the 17th century. On the north side, embedded in a narrow, roofed porch, opens a slightly pointed portal with four archivolts that rest on simple capitals with fighters . The latter are decorated with small heads, animals and tendrils.
The single-nave nave opens into a right-angled choir with a semicircular apse in the east . Two three-quarter columns divide the outer wall of the apse into three fields, each pierced by a round arched window. The apse windows have artfully carved capitals. On one capital harpies with Phrygian caps can be seen, another capital shows the fall of man , on a warrior the snake is depicted. The central apse window is covered with a tympanum in its arched field , on which a bearded figure with outspread wings is depicted under a serrated arch .
Murals
The wall paintings of the church are dated to the 13th century. The apse calotte is occupied by a wall painting depicting a pantocrator , surrounded by a mandorla . Originally the evangelist symbols were depicted in the spandrels , of which only the lion of Mark and the bull of Luke can be recognized. The paintings on the side walls of the choir with scenes of the Last Judgment , the punishments of hell and the weighing of the soul of St. Michael are better preserved .
