Santa Maria Church

The Church of Santa Maria ( consecrated to St. Mary ) is a late Gothic white church building and the landmark of the former fishing village of Cadaqués on the Costa Brava in Catalonia ( Spain ). The church is located on the highest point of the historic town center.

history

A previous church has been documented in Cadaqués since the 13th century, which was destroyed in 1543 by the Ottoman corsair Khair ad-Din Barbarossa . The church was rebuilt in the middle of the 16th century - with the large participation of the fishermen of the village - in the late Gothic style. The local writer Frederic Rahola i Trèmols described this historical event in one verse as follows:

" L'església del meu poble ( The church of my village )
la feren els pescadors ( was built by fishermen )
treballant els jorns de festa ( working on public holidays )
en bé del nostre Senyor. "(In the service of our Lord. )

The church got its current appearance after renovations and extensions in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

architecture

The church has a nave with side chapels and a polygonal apse with seven sides. The bell tower is square and has an octagonal top. The church building was whitewashed on the outside.

Furnishing

  • Baroque main altar from the 18th century, designed by Jacinto Moreto; the design and execution of the altarpiece was done by the sculptors Pau Costa and Joan Torras. The altar, 23 meters high and 12 meters wide, is dedicated to the Radiant Madonna; he is considered to be one of the most important baroque elders from the school of Vic des Alt Empordà . The church has nine other baroque altars, but they are much smaller.
  • Organ by Josep Boscà, built between 1689 and 1691; it is considered to be one of the oldest organs in Catalonia.
