The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta is a church in the old town of Locarno in the Swiss canton of Ticino . It is also known as "Chiesa Nuova" (New Church) designated and with the neighboring canons house is a protected cultural asset of national importance. The baroque church was consecrated in 1636. The church contains one of the most important baroque stucco decorations in the entire canton.

history

The construction was arranged by the patrician Cristoforo Orelli and started between 1628 and 1630. The church was consecrated to Maria Assunta on June 5, 1636 . It was later expanded and restored in 1899 and 1967–1971.

Building

The building has a single nave and has two side chapels and a polygonal choir. The tower with a pointed roof rises on its southern flank. Except for the north facade, the building is extremely simple. The windows are set at a greater height. The portal of the façade in the north is decorated with the Orelli coat of arms and flanked by frescoes with the Annunciation. A mighty stucco figure of St. Christopher also refers to the donor. The stucco statues of Saints Rochus , Sebastian , Victor and Michael are presented in four side niches .

Furnishing

The entrance is raised by a richly painted gallery . The chapel of St. Germanus was built on the east wall between 1687 and 1690 and decorated with stucco at the beginning of the 18th century. The altarpiece keeps the saint's relics . The Ascension Chapel opposite was opened to the ship in 1779. The wooden statue of Assunta dates from 1672 and is attributed to the workshop of Francesco Torriani . Large stucco statues of Saints Veronica and Anna are placed in niches of the ship .

The interior and the walls of the chancel are adorned with rich stucco work and two fresco cycles with scenes from the life of Mary and the Gospel. The main altar is made of stucco marble (Italian: scagliola ) and dates from the second half of the eighteenth century. The small tabernacle in wood and chiseled silver is about a hundred years older.

Others

To the east of the church is the canon house " Casa dei Canonici " from the 16th to 17th centuries. It is a three-storey patrician palace with five window axes.
