The cardinal title of cardinal deacon of Santi Angeli Custodi a Città Giardino was given by Pope Paul VI. with the elevation of the eponymous Roman parish church of Santi Angeli Custodi a Città Giardino to title diaconia re-created in the Apostolic Letter Quandoquidem Sacrorum Cardinalium of February 5, 1965 .

Pope Paul VI justified the creation of the new title in Quandoquidem Sacrorum Cardinalium with the need to have a sufficient number of titles available for the increasing number of cardinals.
