The Sarah Wiener Foundation is a non-profit foundation based in Erfurt and office in Berlin , which has been calling 2007 the nutritional awareness to encourage in children. The chef Sarah Wiener is the founder and chairwoman of the board .

Foundation work

The foundation's educational programs are intended to educate people about the preparation, origin and variety of foods and teach children how to eat a balanced and varied diet. The starting point for this is the assumption that children who make their own cooking experiences at an early age, try out many flavors and experience for themselves how food is produced in agriculture, will also benefit in adulthood. In order to increase its reach, the foundation works with a multiplier approach and trains educators, teachers and social workers who can then integrate the topic of nutrition into everyday life in day-care centers and schools.

Projects

"I can cook!" Initiative

In 2016 the foundation started the nationwide initiative “I can cook!” With the Barmer Ersatzkasse . The initiative is intended to help strengthen nutrition education in daycare centers and schools. “I can cook!” Qualifies educators in one-day training courses to cook fresh meals with children in their facilities and to awaken their interest in a balanced diet. Accompanying educational materials such as scientific background information, recipes in seasonal variations and educational tips support implementation in daily practice. The training courses are offered throughout Germany and are free of charge. The training is intended to enable educators, as so-called “indulgence ambassadors”, to independently offer cooking and nutrition courses in their facilities. These can be integrated, as a project week or in the daycare everyday, school lessons AG take place.

The “Hoffahrten” program

The foundation has been inviting daycare groups and elementary school classes to trips to a farm since 2009 and organizes around 100 day excursions for around 2,500 daycare and elementary school children to farms all over Germany. The foundation currently works with around 30 sustainably managed farms nationwide. The farms visited are mostly family-run mixed farms, most of which are also members of the organic farming demonstration farms network . The foundation's farm network is growing continuously. The aim of the program is to teach the children the origin and variety of foods by helping them work in the fields. This includes tasting and preparing the food. The principles of sustainable and ecological agriculture as part of the environment, economy and society should also be illustrated.

partner

Partners include the Barmer Ersatzkasse , the federal organic farming program and IN FORM , the federal government's national action plan for improving eating and physical activity in Germany.
