Sarcodes sanguinea is the only plant species of the monotypic genus Sarcodes inthe heather family (Ericaceae).

description

Sarcodes sanguinea is a chlorophyllless , myco-heterotrophic , perennial herbaceous plant that usually reaches heights of 15 to 30 (rarely up to 50) cm. It is covered with multicellular glandular hairs. Their roots are fibrous, the shoot and inflorescence axis sprouting from them is red to orange. The leaves are simple.

The unbranched inflorescence is multi-flowered. The five-fold flowers are bell-shaped, slightly sack-shaped at the base. The five free sepals are 10 to 15 mm long. The five 12 to 18 mm long petals are fused bell-shaped over about three quarters of their length. The ten stamens are two thirds as long as the crown . The 3 to 4 mm long anthers are elongated and briefly spurred, at the end with clearly emphasized slits. The nectaries are lobed low. Five carpels have become a top permanent ovary grown. The stylus is 3 to 8 mm long and ends in a five-lobed scar.

The capsule fruit opens irregularly and has a diameter of 1 to 2.5 cm. The thick-walled seeds are approximately egg-shaped and 0.7 to 0.9 mm long; they turn reddish-brown when ripe.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 64.

distribution

The species is found in western North America from Oregon and California to Mexico ( Baja California ) at altitudes of 1070 to 3050 meters.
