The southern European roach ( Sarmarutilus rubilio , Syn . : Rutilus rubilio ) is a freshwater fish that lives in inland waters of southern Europe in the catchment area of the Adriatic Sea , Italy , Dalmatia and western Greece .

features

The body shape of the southern European roach is very similar to the roach ( R. rutilus ). It is accordingly a spindle-shaped, high-backed fish of the open water with a terminal mouth that can reach a body length of 20 centimeters or a maximum of 25 centimeters. The color is silvery with shiny flanks and gray longitudinal bands. The pectoral, ventral and anal fins are reddish in color, the eyes can be yellow or red.

The ventral fins are ventral and like all species of the genus, the southern European roach has only one dorsal fin. This has 3 hard and 9 to 11 soft rays, the anal fin also has 3 hard and 8 to 11 soft rays. The pectoral fins consist of a hard ray and 16 to 17 soft rays and the ventral fins consist of 2 hard and 8 soft rays. There are 38 to 45 scales along the sidelines .

From the genus Rutilus , to which the southern European roach was placed until mid-2014, it differs through large pearl organs on the middle of the head and on the rump scales in sexually mature males, through the pharyngeal tooth formula (5-5 in Sarmarutilus , 6-5 in Rutilus ) and the preference for flowing waters as a habitat, while rutilus species are more likely to occur in stagnant waters.

distribution

The southern European roach is limited in its distribution to a narrowly limited area in the area of the catchment area of the Adriatic Sea , Italy , Dalmatia , the Balkans and western Greece .

Way of life

The southern European roach is a schooling fish that inhabits flowing and standing waters and is very adaptable in terms of water characteristics. The food consists of plankton and benthic organisms as well as insects from the surface of the water and aquatic plants. The spawning season is from April to May, the eggs are laid in sticky balls in the bank area between herbaceous plants.
