Sarsa de Surta ( Aragonese Sasa de Surta ) is a village in Spain that belongs to the municipality of Ainsa-Sobrarbe .

location

Ainsa-Sobrarbe is located in the district of Sobrarbe , which together with 9 other districts forms the province of Huesca (the provincial capital is also called Huesca ). The 3 provinces of Huesca, Saragossa and Teruel form the Comunidad Autónoma de Aragón. Aragon is in the very north of Spain, bordering France, and is about as far from the Mediterranean as it is from the Atlantic. Sarsa de Surta is about 50 km as the crow flies and about 90 km by road from the French border or the Tunel de Bielsa.

In addition, Sarsa de Surta is located in a natural park, in the Parque Natural de las Sierras y Cañones de Guara (Natural Park of the Mountains and Gorges of the Guara), in short: Sierra de Guara . The Sierra de Guara is a mountain range in front of the Central Pyrenees.

Overview of Sarsa de Surta from Peña de Surta.

The entire district was declared a Geopark Sobrarbe by UNESCO due to its geological features .

Sarsa de Surta is located on the right bank of the Rio Vero and is divided into three districts with the parish church in the center. The houses are particularly impressive because of their traditional construction.

Together with 10 other villages, Sarsa de Surta is located in the south of the district in a natural enclave known as the Valle del Alto Vero or Valle de Tierra Bucho . (Tierra = earth / land, Bucho = box tree in Aragonese). The boxwood is actually one of the predominant plants here.

history

In the 1950s and 1960s, the village was gradually abandoned by its residents. They moved to the larger cities or settled in the agricultural colonization areas of southern districts. Today only ruins or stone piles are left of some properties. Others were made habitable again or renovated by their owners around 1990 and have since been used as second homes on weekends or during vacation periods. Only a few houses have changed hands. Since 2001 the Casa Pedro Buil, today "Casa La Joya" (holiday apartment), has been inhabited all year round. Currently (2015) the village has four residents from three nations.

village life

The church and the village community center have been largely restored. The village festival is celebrated on August 15th (public holiday throughout Spain). The fields are largely cultivated by farmers from the neighboring villages, as is a flock of sheep that are housed in a large stable not far from the village.

Attractions

Romanesque bell tower in Sarsa de Surta

The Romanesque parish church dates from the 11th or 12th century. It has a square bell tower with a round arched window divided by a column. The bridge over the Rio Vero also dates from the Romanesque era. Other sights are the Drólica cave, in which ceramic parts of the bell-cup culture were found, and the Foradada cave, a Visigoth burial site. Culturally, the former mill can be visited, which has been converted into the current ethnological museum “Molino de Pedro Buil”.

landscape

There is a panoramic view from the summit of the Peña de Surta (1,248 m above sea level). To the north you can see the Pyrenees with Monte Perdido ; a little below the summit runs the shank friction path ( cañada ) from the times of transhumance . Furthermore you can see into the gorge of the Balcez and the opposite mountain range Sierra de Balcez with the Ermita de Santa Marina. From the north edge you can see the abandoned village of Bagüeste. With a bit of luck you can watch a feral herd of goats from the summit or during the ascent. The remains of a medieval fortification tower are located on the summit.
