Baobab tree in Savanur |
Savanur ( Kannada : ಸವಣೂರ Savaṇūra [ ˈsʌʋʌɳuːrʌ ]) is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka with 40,000 inhabitants (2011 census).
Until 1948 Savanur was the capital of the princely state of Savanur .
Savanur is located in the Haveri district in north-central Karnataka at an altitude of around 590 meters above sea level on the Deccan Plateau. The city is the capital of the Taluk (sub-district) Savanur. The next largest cities are the district capital Haveri around 30 kilometers south and Hubli-Dharwad around 60 kilometers north. The national highway NH 4 passes 10 kilometers west of Savanur . Savanur train station is eight kilometers east of the city.
Savanur was originally surrounded by a fortification of which remains have been preserved. On the outskirts of Savanur there are three large baobab trees with trunk circumferences of 18, 16 and 14 meters. How these trees, originally from Africa, got to Savanur is not clear. According to local legend, they were introduced by the god Krishna 5000 years ago .
