The butterwort saxifrage is a perennial plant that reaches heights of 2 to 5 centimeters. It forms loose lawns. The rosette leaves are 5 to 15 millimeters long, lanceolate to spatulate , with entire margins and scattered glandular hairs to bald. They have a light, prickly tip. The stem is upright, has long protruding glandular hairs, 0 to 2 alternate leaves and 1 to 2 flowers. The petals are 2 to 3 millimeters long, lanceolate and pale green to lemon yellow. They are shorter to slightly longer, but much narrower than the sepals . The sepals are spread out more or less horizontally at the time of flowering.

Flowering time is from June to September.

The species has chromosome number 2n = 52.

Occurrence

The butterwort saxifrage occurs in the Limestone Alps (Italy, Austria, Slovenia) east of Lake Como and the Salzach and in the Apennines . Information from the Pyrenees and the area of ​​the former Yugoslavia are probably incorrect. It grows subalpine to alpine on moist calcareous rubble and in shady crevices at altitudes of 1,600 to 2,800 meters. He is a character species of the association Thlaspion rotundifolii.
