features

The Scaglia comb rat reaches a head-trunk length of 19.5 centimeters and a tail length of 8.5 centimeters, the weight is 270 grams. The ear length is 10 millimeters and the rear foot length with claw is 37 millimeters. All information comes from the holotype , i.e. the individual on which the species description is based. It is a medium-sized species of the genus. The color is ocher-brown on the back and becomes lighter brownish-yellow on the sides of the body and belly. The hair is long and silky, it is clearly two-tone. The back hair at the base is up to three fifths black and then lighter brown, the belly hair is about half black. The tail is covered with short and sparsely distributed hair; it is lighter brown in the front area and black in the last third.

The skull is strongly built and narrower than that of many other crested rats. The upper incisors are not protruding ( orthodontic ). The nasal bones are very narrow, the zygomatic arches are comparatively narrow. The timpani are slightly inflated and look round when viewed from the side.

distribution

The distribution area of the Scaglia crested rat is limited to the province of Tucumán in the north of Argentina , where the species has only been proven at its original location.

Way of life

There is no information about the way of life of the species. Like all crested rats, it lives largely underground in duct systems and feeds on the available vegetation as a vegetarian.

Systematics

The Scaglia comb rat is classified as an independent species within the genus of the comb rats ( Ctenomys ), which consists of about 70 species. The first scientific description of the species comes from the Argentine zoologist Julio Rafael Contreras in 1999. He specified the Los Cardones National Park in the province of Tucumán as the type locality ; the find height was documented at 2500 meters.

Apart from the nominate form, no subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Status, threat and protection

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) does not classify the Scaglia comb rat in a hazard category due to a lack of data , but rather lists it as "data deficient". There is uncertainty about the distribution of species, threats and conservation measures in the Andean region. It is believed that this species is threatened, but very little information is available about its occurrence, way of life, stocks and populations .
