history

The former church saw, later called Schüttesäge (owner was the host of the Gasthaus zur Schütte in Wolfach ), was first mentioned here in 1491. It was operated here as a sawmill until 1931 , and the town of Schiltach opened the museum in 1989. The chute saw has an undershot water wheel with a diameter of 7.20 m, which drives the transmissions using water power and generates electricity in the process. The facility is a listed building .

Timber industry

The exhibition shows forest management and the processing of wood, its use for half-timbered construction , the connection to rafting (production of rafts from wood) and tannery (bark extraction for the red tanners ).

rafting

Rafting was one of Schiltach's main branches of business until the 19th century. In the center of the museum area is a large model of one of the rafts that were once several hundred meters long on the Kinzig. The exhibition documents the life of the raftsmen with historical photographs from that time. Original tools, work clothes, etc. can also be seen in the exhibition. A media station shows the fascination of timber transport with a ride of today's Schiltach rafters. It shows what is meant by a sturgeon raft and how it was made.

tannery

The tannery was another important line of business in Schiltach. Today there is still a white tannery in town . The exhibition shows the various tanning techniques using numerous tools and leather examples. The connection between the red tannery and the timber industry also becomes visible. A tanning pit of the red tannery stands on an outside area.
