The Schafirrsee (also Gerolfinger Weiher or Gerolfinger See ) is a bathing lake in the Gerolfinger oak forest in the urban area of Ingolstadt in Bavaria . The name of the water is derived from "where the sheep got lost". The lake emerged from a distillery whose gravel deposits were dredged and used industrially in the second half of the 20th century. The resulting pit filled with groundwater and thus became today's Stretch .

geography

The Schafirrsee is located in the Gerolfing oak forest, part of the Donauauwald Neuburg – Ingolstadt nature park , and is around 1.6 km south of the center of Gerolfing and around 7 km from Ingolstadt's old town. The Danube flows eastwards only about 250 m from the south bank . The water has a conspicuous shape that, when viewed from the east, is reminiscent of that of the letter “P”, near whose (imaginary) hallmark there is an island with a diameter of around 40 meters.

Path connection

Gravel roads and trails lead around the entire lake . The main connection to the lake is ensured by an asphalt road which, coming from Gerolfing in the northeast, leads near the lake and ends in a parking lot . From the southwest bank there is a forest path that leads to the Danube Cycle Path on the banks of the Danube. Another forest path leads away from the lake in the north.

use

The lake is one of the club waters of the Schafirrsee Fischerverein Gerolfing eV, whose clubhouse is near the north bank, and is used and maintained by this. Therefore there are regular anglers on the shore. Between the western part of the lake and the parking lot there is a small guard station of the Ingolstadt water rescue service.

In addition, the Schafirrsee is a popular bathing water in Gerolfing and the surrounding area, which is explicitly developed as a local recreation area , but there are no large contiguous sunbathing areas, but in addition to a central point with an eight meter long jetty in the north, many small shore areas that are distributed around the entire lake lie. Two anchored bathing crosses swim in the northeastern part of the lake . On the northeast bank near the car park there is a changing room , a wooden sun lounger and two table tennis tables . There are also several mobile toilets and garbage cans on the lakeshore, which are maintained by the Schafirrsee Fischer Verein. There are also bike racks on the north and north-west banks . Due to the risk of forest fires, campfires and barbecues are not allowed on the entire lake shore, although the latter is tolerated. Due to rare animals and plants, the island and part of the south bank are designated protected areas . Due to its small size, the lake freezes over relatively quickly in winter and is therefore used by many people for ice stock sport or ice skating .
