The Sheep Church is the ruins of a chapel above Lißberg in the northern Wetterau in the Wetterau district , at the foot of the Vogelsberg in Hesse .

history

The church was built on a resting place of the funeral procession of Boniface of Mainz to his preferred resting place Fulda . It seems unlikely that it was built before the 16th century. It existed as a church building only for a short time. In the 19th century, the ruins were heavily overgrown with trees and bushes. In the years 2002 to 2003 excavations as part of the Bonifatius Route project did not reveal any further findings. In 2004 the ruin was restored. The building was 7.10 × 4.20 meters in size and had no apse . The sheep church was first mentioned in 1578, when it had long been in ruins.

The sheep church is located directly on the Bonifatius Route and on Via Antiqua or Rechten Nidderstrasse .
