The Schangenbach rises at an altitude of about 267  m in the Northern Vosges in the Forêt domaniale de Steinbach north of the Steinberg directly on the German-French border. It initially runs about 250 m in an easterly direction, then turns south and then flows through a green zone. It now reaches the northern edge of Obersteinbach and traverses this town through underground pipes. To the south of Rue Principale ( D3 ) it emerges from the ground again on the surface and finally flows into the Steinbach from the left at a height of 244  m .
