The Schantelbach rises in the Köwerich forest about 2.4 km east of Pölich at an altitude of 384  m above sea level. NN . The stream first flows north-northeast, then turns to the northwest and then turns again in a wide arc to the northeast. The brook reaches Leiwen . After flowing through the community, the Schantelbach empties at 119  m above sea level. NN on the right into the Moselle .

On its 5.3 km long path, the stream overcomes a height difference of 265 m, which corresponds to a mean bed gradient of 50 ‰. It drains a 5.973 km² catchment area over the Moselle and Rhine to the North Sea .
