A dummy bus stop (also called a pseudo stop or phantom stop ) is a seemingly normal stop , which is usually equipped with a stop sign and a posted timetable . This timetable is fictional and an omnibus will never stop at this dummy . Some of the bogus bus stops have a bench.

purpose

The dummy bus stops are used to care for people with dementia . People suffering from dementia often have short-term memory disorders and as the disease progresses they often live more and more in the past. You want to return to the old familiar surroundings or follow old rituals. Because of this, they are restless and go to a stop to wait for the next bus, firmly believing that it will take them home away from this place.

Often, the home resident should spend a short time at the bus stop until they have forgotten the reason for their intention to travel. He should then return to the home and in some cases have the firm belief that he has been somewhere else. The aim of the stop is to reduce the risk of residents getting lost outside the home and having to be looked for by the nursing staff. Scientific studies on the effectiveness of dummy bus stops have not yet existed.

Notice at a dummy bus stop

Employees at Landhaus Laspert in Remscheid came up with the idea for the bogus bus stop in 2006. The idea was adopted in several cities, for example in Schwerin , Rostock-Evershagen , Düsseldorf-Benrath , Fürth , Wuppertal-Wichlinghausen , Hamburg-Eidelstedt , Dortmund , Munich and Cologne . The stops were set up in front of the house, in the courtyard or - as for example in the St. Mauritius Therapy Clinic in Meerbusch  - in the hallway of the facilities.

criticism

The concept of using dummy bus stops in the care of people with dementia does not meet with unanimous approval among experts. For example, a comment in the basic statement on the care and support of people with dementia in inpatient facilities of the medical service of the umbrella association of health insurance companies states: "If the bus does not come, questions arise such as" when will the bus finally arrive ". The patient becomes nervous rather than calm ”. People with dementia are "not taken seriously in their illness". If the nurse get on it, it will consolidate the dementia patient's mad life, but will miss Carl Rogers ' claim to authenticity and truthfulness . The therapy goal “rest” only relieves the caregivers, but lacks a positive effect for the person concerned, for whom waiting is declared as a purpose.

Cultural reception

Such a dummy bus stop is described in the children's book Die wilden Zwerge 05: The Christmas Singing , which was published in autumn 2009. Ms. Weinmann, suffering from dementia, regularly goes to the bus stop here because she thinks she is on her way to school.

Such a bus stop also plays a crucial role in an episode of the Danni Lowinski television series .

In the animated short film Harvie Krumpet (2003), the main character uses such a stop in an Australian nursing home.

In the short film Placebus - Waiting for Godot's Bus , waiting at a dummy bus stop is documented.

In March 2010, the US radio program Radiolab reported on the bogus bus stop in Düsseldorf-Benrath.
