Schellas Hyndman (* 1951 in Macau ) is an American football coach and former football player.

Since 2015 he has been coaching the soccer team of the Grand Canyon Antelopes, which represent the Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona .

The former midfielder only played football for a few years. He had his most successful time as a college soccer coach at Southern Methodist University from 1984 to 2008. During this time, he set the record of 466 wins out of a total of 637 games. In 1981 he was named NSCAA Trainer of the Year.

Player career

Hyndmann is originally from Macau . His mother had Russian and French ancestry and his father was from Portugal . After the communists took power in China, the family fled to the USA on a container ship in 1957. There they first settled in Springfield, Ohio before moving to Vandalia, Ohio . There Hyndman attended Butler High School.

After high school, he moved to Eastern Illinois University , which he was able to finance through a football scholarship. In his first year he won the NAIA National Men's Soccer Championship with the team. In 1973 he left Eastern Illinois with a bachelor's degree in sports.

In 1975 he played one season for the Cincinnati Comets in the American Soccer League .

Coaching career

After graduating from Eastern Illinois University, he went to Murray State University in the fall of 1973 , where he received his master's degree in 1975 . In addition to his student days, he coached the university's soccer team. In 1976 he worked as a teacher at the Escola Graduada in São Paulo . During this time he also worked as an employee of the coaching staff at São Paulo FC .

In 1977 Hyndman returned to the United States and took over the post of soccer coach at Eastern Illinois University, whose soccer team played in Division II of the NCAA . In the following seven years, his team scored 98 wins in 133 games. In 1981 he rose with the team in the NCAA Division I and reached 3rd place at the end of the season. He was voted coach of the year in the same year. In 2001, Hyndman was inducted into the Eastern Illinois Athletic Hall of Fame.

In 1984 he became a coach at Southern Methodist University . In over 20 years he designed very successful football with the Mustangs and has received several awards during this time.

On July 16, 2008, left college soccer and coached FC Dallas . With the MLS team, he made it to the final of the MLS Cup in the 2010 season . After the 2013 season, he announced his retirement.

Since January 13, 2015 he has been training the College Soccer team at Grand Canyon University.

Trivia

  • Hyndman became a member of the NSCAA Executive Committee in 2001 and served as President of the National Collegiate Athletic Association for one year in 2005.
  • In addition to soccer, he teaches the Japanese martial art Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu .
  • His grandson, Emerson Hyndman , is an American international and plays for Fulham FC in England.
