The Scheppau is a stream over nine kilometers long in the Lower Saxony district of Helmstedt in the area of the city of Königslutter . It arises in Bornum from various drains on the northern slope of the Elm . The stream runs mainly to the north and northwest and flows south of Glentorf from the left into the Schunter .

geography

course

Some of the source streams of the Scheppau arise south of Bornum on the Elmrand and often fall dry in summer. There is a spring in Bornum that pours all year round. The coordinates of the confluence are given here as the source point.

On the northern outskirts of the village, the brook passes a new development area and the grounds of the old mill and is channel-like to the north to the place of the same name Scheppau . It flows around this north and swings to the northwest to the Sundern forest area near Rieseberg . Behind the wooded area to the north and the town in the south, the course is directed again to the north, almost parallel to the Schunter , which it reaches at Glentorf.

To the north of Bornum, the Braunschweig – Magdeburg railway line and the A2 motorway at Ochsendorf cross the stream.

Water quality

Assessment 2012

The Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation lists the Scheppau in its data sheets as "Water body 15060". According to this data sheet, the state company classifies the Scheppau as a “ loess-clay-shaped lowland stream ” of type 18 with regard to the type of flowing water and rates the chemical composition as “bad” due to mercury in the water. The overall ecological condition is described as "moderate" due to considerable structural deficits. Hydromorphologically , the mapping resulted in: 14% level VII, 44% level VI, 24% level V, 14% level IV, 2% level III and only 1% level II. The reasons given are the predominantly bare bank strips and the natural course. In the arable fields, the cultivated area extends to the edge of the river, where fertilizers and pesticides are introduced. The recommendations for action for an ecological improvement focus on structural improvements on land owned by the state and on avoiding the input of substances and sediments. The data sheet contains a number of individual measures for improvement so that the water can in future meet the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive .

Renaturation

The state of Lower Saxony is planning the ecological upgrading of the Scheppau as a priority body of water according to the EU Water Framework Directive of the European Union. At the beginning of 2017, the NLWKN created a natural stream from the strongly straightened and structurally poor stream in four construction phases. In addition to relocating the course of the brook and of gravel and dead wood in the brook bottom, the brook edges were redesigned in such a way that alluvial trees, wet grassland and reed beds can arise. With 290,000 euros from EU funds from the river development program, the section between Scheppau and Rotenkamp was redesigned by the NLWKN. The aim of the project is to achieve the good ecological status striven for according to the Water Framework Directive with a continuity from the mouth to the source in a natural structure.
