The Scheuchzer devil's claw ( Phyteuma scheuchzeri ) is a species of the devil's claws ( Phyteuma ) within the family of the bellflower family (Campanulaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

The Scheuchzer devil's claw is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 70 centimeters. The leaves are light bluish green.

Generative characteristics

The bracts are lanceolate to linear and usually sometimes longer than the head-shaped inflorescence . The deep blue crown is almost straight before blooming. There are three scars.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.

Occurrence

The Scheuchzer devil's claw occurs from the Graian to the Julian Southern Alps and also in the northern Apennines. It usually thrives in crevices and block corridors on limestone and silicate rock at altitudes of up to 3600 meters. It has its optimum in societies of the class Asplenietenea trichomanis.

Phyteuma Scheuchzeri was first published in 1785 by Carlo Allioni . Synonyms for Phyteuma Scheuchzeri All. are: Phyteuma ovatum Lam. nom. superfl., Phyteuma corniculatum Clairv. nom. superfl., Phyteuma corniculatum subsp. Scheuchzeri (All.) Gaudin , Rapunculus Scheuchzeri (All.) Bubani .

From Phyteuma scheuchzeri there are two subspecies:

  • Phyteuma Scheuchzeri subsp. columnae (E. Thomas) Bech. (Syn .: Phyteuma columnae E.Thomas , Phyteuma corniculatum subsp. Columnae (E.Thomas) Gaudin , Phyteuma charmelioides Biroli , Phyteuma scheuchzeri var. Serratum W.DJKoch , Phyteuma corniculatum subsp. Charmelioides (Biroli) Rich.Schulz , Phyteuma corniculatum var . petraeum Rich.Schulz , Phyteuma corniculatum var. serratum (WDJKoch) Rich.Schulz , Phyteuma charmelii var. serratum (WDJKoch) Rouy , Phyteuma Scheuchzeri subsp. charmelioides (Biroli) Hayek ): It occurs in the southern Alps as well as in the northern Apennines . It thrives optimally in companies of the Potentillion caulescentis association.
  • Phyteuma Scheuchzeri All. subsp. Scheuchzeri (Syn .: Phyteuma Scheuchzeri var. michelii Schult. , Phyteuma humile Roth nom. illeg., Phyteuma corniculatum var. angustifolium Gaudin , Phyteuma Scheuchzeri var. leucanthum Schur , Phyteuma corniculatum var. vulgare Rich.Schulz ): It only comes to the Southern Alps.

Scheuchzer's devil's claw is rarely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens. It has been in culture since 1813 at the latest .
