Schioppettino ( pronunciation : [ skioppetˈti: no ]; synonyms: Ribolla Nera , Pocalza ) is a red grape variety of the Ribolla grape family , which is grown in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia . The wine of the same name obtained from it is mainly produced in Prepotto and the associated Frazione Albana as well as some neighboring communities in the border area with Slovenia . The Cialla vineyard near Prepotto in particular has become known for its fine wines. The variety was first mentioned in documents in Albana Castle in 1282.
In the meantime, the Schioppettino vine has found its way to Australia and the USA , albeit on a modest scale for the time being. John Holdredge in the Russian River Valley AVA , Sonoma County ( California ) (→ Viticulture in California ) was one of the pioneers.
