Schirnewitz is a district of Altenberga in the Saale-Holzland district in Thuringia .

geography

Schirnewitz is located in a small valley, the Borntal, which stretches from the large Saale valley between Kahla and Rothenstein west to Zimmritz. Schirnewitz belongs to the Saale-Holzland district and, together with Altendorf , Greuda and Altenberga, forms the municipality of Altenberga. The hamlet can be reached via the federal road 88 with a branch to the west to Altendorf and from here towards Milda as the next village. The place is then directly on the connecting road in a rural area.

history

According to research, the village was founded around 1389 as "Schernewitz", but is first mentioned as "Schirnwicz" in 1349 in the loan book of Frederick the Strict . On July 27, 1390, the first documentary mention was made and archived.

It got its current name around 1457. The name comes from the Slavic (Cirnovica) and means Schwarzbach, a stream that ran through the place (cirny = black). The densely wooded (black) gorge of the Borntal justifies this name to this day.

economy

The hamlet has always been characterized by agriculture. The local farmers were collectivized into the LPG (P) Kahla during the GDR era . After the reunification, the agricultural cooperative Schöps eG emerged from this.
