Schistidium apocarpum , the hidden capsule , is a moss that occurs in Central Europe on walls up to the city centers.
description
The growth habit of the plants varies between prostrate on the edge of the pad and more or less upright in the middle of the pad. The black-green, when dry, often almost completely black stems are 1–4 cm long.
The leaves are broadly lanceolate and end in a glass hair that is not so long that it can be seen with the naked eye. The leaf veins extend into the glass hair. The entire edge of the leaf, which is at most serrated in the area of the glass hair, is often rolled up into the upper half of the leaf. The cells of the leaf blade are as wide as they are long in the upper part of the leaf and longer than wide in the lower part.
The seta is so short that the brown, round capsule is almost completely sunk into the leaves. The columella falls out with the capsule lid, so that the open capsules are very wide open.
Systematics
While the species was previously treated as a collective species with many forms, many forms have been separated off as separate species over the course of time. In this group Schistidium apocarpum s. l. For example, the species S. atrofuscum , S. brunnescens , S. confertum , S. strictum and S. trichodon are found in Central Europe .
Distribution and location requirements
The moss is cosmopolitan .
It grows on stone, mostly calcareous rock. It is widespread and common on walls, mortar or concrete in Central Europe and can be found even in city centers together with Grimmia pulvinata .
