Battle of Sellnitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Battle of Sellnitz ( Czech : Bitva u Želenic ) on September 23, 1438, the remains of the Hussite army fought against the Saxons . The Hussites lost the battle.

prehistory

Like the Battle of Grotniki in the following year, the battle is usually still attributed to the Hussite Wars , which had essentially ended since the arrival of Emperor Sigismund on August 23, 1436 in Prague. Previously, on July 5, 1436, the Jihlava compacts had been agreed between the representatives of the Hussites and the imperial side in the Iglau parliament . But not all Hussites were ready to accept this compromise.

From the ranks of the dissatisfied, a crowd formed , which was mainly drawn from the towns of Louny (Laun), Žatec (Saaz) and Slaný (Schlan). He was led by Petr Holický ze Šternberka (Peter von Sternberg), Petr ze Zvířetic and Václav Carda z Petrovic . At Sellnitz the heap met Saxon troops who were on their way home from Prague to Meißen with their Duke Friedrich II . The Meissen army was accompanied by Jakoubek z Vřesovic , once a Hussite military leader, now on the imperial side, and his troops. The North Bohemian group tried to defend themselves in a wagon castle . But the wagon castle was taken by the Saxon troops, supported by Jakoubek z Vřesovic and his crew. Around 2,000 Hussites were killed and the same number were taken prisoner.
