The slender sky gazers (Leptoscopidae) are a family of perch relatives (Percomorphaceae). The fish live in the sea around South Australia and New Zealand and temporarily migrate to brackish water lagoons and estuaries. The New Zealand species Leptoscopus macropygus also lives in the lower reaches of the rivers.

features

The Leptoscopidae have an elongated, scaled body with a long dorsal and anal fin . The two pelvic fins are far apart. The mouth is slightly above , the lips have fringes. The eyes are directed upwards. The sideline organ lies centrally on the flanks. The sky gazers (Uranoscopidae), some of which have similar characteristics, are not closely related to the slim sky gazers.

The fish are 11 to 17 centimeters long, depending on the species.

External system

According to Odani & Imamura, the slim sky gazers are the sister group of the sand cave fish (Creediidae), with which they share a total of 43 autapomorphies . Sister group of the clade formed by both families are the Hemerocoetidae . The close relationship of all four groups is supported by 17 autapomorphies.
