Schleswig lions
The Schleswig lions represent the Duchy of Schleswig .
heraldry
It is about two blue, heraldically right -facing, red-armored, red-tongued, originally crowned lions walking on top of each other - heraldically correct: leoparded lions - on a golden background. The two lions are a reduction from the coat of arms of Denmark . They can be traced for the first time on a sign under Erich I ( Erik Abelsøn ) in the middle of the 13th century. As heraldic animals , the two lions belong to the common figures and, as lions, have a proper name.
The Schleswig lions are depicted in the coat of arms of Denmark, in the coat of arms of Schleswig-Holstein and in the coat of arms of Sønderjyllands Amt . The district of Schleswig-Flensburg and the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde as well as many offices and communities in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg have both lions or one in confused colors .
Rotation of lions
The depiction of the lions on the current coat of arms of Schleswig-Holstein differs from the original in that the lions are depicted heraldically on the left. At the time of the Schleswig-Holstein uprising , the German-minded Schleswig-Holsteiners had the outward striding lions and the nettle leaf in their coat of arms. They underscored their commitment to the German nation with the double-headed imperial eagle of the Holy Roman Empire .
When the province of Schleswig-Holstein was established after the German-Danish War and the German War , the Crown Prussia left the coat of arms. Only in the Free State of Prussia was the “direction” changed; In order to heraldically underline the close ties between the two parts of the country under constitutional law, the Prussian State Ministry turned the lions around with a decree of July 30, 1928.
