The Schleusengraben is a canal in the Hamburg district of Bergedorf . It connects the Bille with the Dove Elbe and is around 2.6 kilometers long.

It was laid out in 1443 to protect what was then the island of Billwerder from flooding. He followed an old watercourse - part of the "Löse" says a source, other evidence speaks of the "Loziene" or of "a wide, shallow body of water called the " Lotzine " (Slavic " Lucina "means swamp place)" that of which was once formed without congestion.

The Schleusengraben is one of the oldest artificial waterways in Germany. Since the lock on the Heckkaten was built in 1494, the water has been flowing from the upper reaches of the Bille through the lock ditch into the Elbe river system . Since its completion, the canal guaranteed the transport connection between Bergedorf and the city of Hamburg by water, since the middle Bille (the direct waterway to Hamburg) was not navigable. The Bergedorfer Hafen (Serrahn) at the northern end of the Schleusengraben developed into an important transshipment point, especially for wood from the Sachsenwald , during the early modern period . The cheap and efficient transport route promoted Bergedorf's industrialization from the 19th century; Numerous production companies sprang up along the Schleusengraben. Since 1929 the Krapphof lock has made the canal independent of ebb and flow .
