The management of the castle goes back to Maria Theresa's will from 1780, in which the separation of building and operational management by the Hofärar (state treasury) was established. The Schönbrunn Castle Authority was later responsible. Under the Vranitzky government , the palace was spun off from the federal administration (today the Federal Real Estate Company ) and on October 10, 1992, the Schönbrunn Palace Culture and Operating Company was established as a 100% subsidiary of the Republic of Austria (Schönbrunn Palace Act) . The founding managing directors were Franz Sattlecker and Wolfgang Kippes. The supervisory body is the Department of Custodial Affairs of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (currently Dept. III / 6, Section Tourism and Historical Objects , Federal Ministry of Economics, Family and Youth).

The company is considered a prime example of a privatized museum business . In a short time it made Schönbrunn Palace one of the best-visited tourist destinations in Austria : in 2017, the showrooms recorded over 2.7 million visits (see Most Visited Sights in Vienna ). In 1996 the palace and park were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The importance of the operating company for the maintenance of the ensemble, its efficiency and the good cooperation with the federal gardens was emphasized several times by UNESCO and ICOMOS . The training and further education programs for employees, for example, are unique in Europe.

The company was soon entrusted with looking after the exhibition areas of the Imperial Apartment (since November 1994) and the Silver Collection (since April 1995) in the Vienna Hofburg . Since June 1998 she has also managed the Imperial Furniture Collection (Möbel Museum Wien). These matters are regulated by lease agreements. In April 2004 the newly founded Sisi Museum in the Hofburg was also taken over.

By 2011, more than 170 million euros, generated from entrance fees and sponsorship contributions, had been invested in the cultural monuments entrusted to them (half of the profits are paid to the federal government). Schönbrunn is one of only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites worldwide (out of almost 1000) that are self-financing without public subsidies (the other is the Tower of London ). Some projects of modern architecture could also be realized through careful embedding ( kindergarten , eye of the museum , Salettl ). In 2011 the company also received the Vienna Business Tourism Prize

In 2012 the not very successful Marchfeldschlösser Revitalisierungs- und Betriebsgesellschaft  (MRBG), which is responsible for two federally owned castles in Lower Austria, was subordinated to the Schönbrunn Palace Culture and Operating Company as a subsidiary. The management was not very enthusiastic, as the expenditure, especially for Schloss Hof, would not be recognized by the tax office as an operating expense, but would be assessed as a private hobby of the company, which would have to be financed from the taxed operating income. The creation of reserves for possible years with fewer visitors should be seen as a priority.
