The St. Martinus Castle Chapel is a listed church building on Schloßstraße 1 a / Martinistraße in Westerholt , a district of Herten in the Recklinghausen district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The church was first mentioned in 1310 and had the rights of a parish church since the 15th century . With the consecration of the newly built St. Martinus Church in 1903, she lost this privilege. In 1907 it was bought back in the neighboring Burghaus Westerholt .

The former parish church is a plastered, late Gothic brick hall with a 5/8 end . The tower ruin is free-standing. ( Location ) The core of the existing building is probably from the 15th century. The nave , which was renewed in 1658 , was demolished in 1907 except for one axis , which was converted into a gallery . The tower was renewed in 1696. The deep rib vaults rest on consoles . The crypt of the Lords of Westerholt is under the choir.

Furnishing

The baroque aedicular table made of wood , with twisted columns and a group of figures of St. Martin and an altar sheet depicting the crucifixion of Christ, the Münster auxiliary bishop Nikolaus Arensdorf consecrated in 1643. Under the group of figures the coat of arms of those of Westerholt. The late Gothic baptismal font , held in the shape of a cup , comes from the 16th century. At a height of 1.20 m, it has a diameter of 0.81 m. The late Gothic tabernacle , which has only survived as a stone fragment , was originally located on the outside of the choir. From earlier pieces of equipment a late Gothic watering can made of brass from the 16th century that was given to the Episcopal Museum in Münster and one of the bells from 1476 with the inscription: “St. Martinus et St. Johannes is called ick, To God's Services roop ick, Johann von Dorpmunde gayt mie mcccLXXvi “.
