History and architecture

Portal of St. Martinus

The basilica was created by Aloys Kersting from 1901 to 1903 in forms of the Rhenish late romanticism. The high tower is to the west, the transept protrudes only a little and the staggered choir closes apsidal . The tower and the transept fronts are richly structured by wheeled windows. The main apse is structured by smaller round windows with five-pas . The stepped portals are decorated with set columns and archivolts . The large sacristy is equipped with stepped gables. The interior is a bound system with alternating columns, the intermediate columns are made of black granite and decorated with lavishly decorated cube capitals . The glare triforium and the staggered arched windows are striking . The ribbed vault rests on broad templates with services , the crossing is domed. The box of the Counts von Westerholt is in the south arm. The figurative painting of the room in bold colors was carried out by Bernhard Gauer from 1928 to 1930 and restored from 1969 to 1978. The leaded glass windows marked 1903 were made by Wilhelm Derix based on a design by Friedrich Stummel .
