Kravaře Castle

Kravaře Castle (German Castle Deutsch Krawarn ) is located in Kravaře ve Slezsku in the Czech-Silesian Okres Opava , Czech Republic .

The original Mannerist building from the 17th century was replaced by a baroque palace with four wings between 1721 and 1728 . The building owner was Johann Rudolf Freiherr von Eichendorff .

The south wing of the palace houses the Michaeliskapelle. The altar there with figures of angels holding the picture “The Fall of the Angels” is attributed to Josef Stern . The ceiling fresco by Franz Georg Eckstein depicts the Assumption of the Virgin.

The courtyard of the palace has arcade loggias on three sides on the ground floor and first floor. Originally these were open, today they are glazed.

The family of the barons von Eichendorff is introduced to the visitor to the exhibition in the castle . The baroque furniture from Opava ( German: Troppau) complements this exhibition.

Until 1781, the rule of Deutsch-Krawarn, with its castle and estate, belonged to the Eichendorff family .

The subsequent owners of the estate were:

In 1914 the aristocratic culture at Schloss Deutsch Krawarn and its private use ended. The property, meanwhile greatly reduced, came to two merchants, Messrs Lammel and Müller . During this time, the trees in the 19 hectare castle park with its 400 to 500 year old oak trees were almost completely cut down.

After the Hultschiner Ländchen fell from Prussia to Czechoslovakia in 1921 , the Czech state became the new owner. The Ministry of Agriculture set up a state business school in the castle. During this time, on January 21, 1937, the roof structure, the ceiling of the first floor and the interior design were destroyed by a large fire. The north wing and the adjacent part burned out. Only the south wing with the chapel miraculously remained intact.

When the Prussian state was able to dispose of the castle again in 1938, the first restoration work was carried out, but was not yet completed by the end of the war in 1945.

It was not until 1970 that the castle was rebuilt. The external appearance has been painstakingly restored in accordance with strict monument preservation criteria. The expansion of the inner rooms, however, corresponds more to the style of the time of the restoration.

Today the castle is owned by the town of Kravaře. A museum, a restaurant, office and social rooms are housed in the premises. The castle park is largely used as a golf course.
